The Calgary Medical Society
The
Calgary
Medical
Society was
established under its current name in 1906. In an effort to
incorporate the outlying districts of
Calgary, some years
later, the name was changed to the
Calgary
& District Medical Society.
In
order to better reflect its association with the
College
of
Physicians
and Surgeons
of Alberta, and the Alberta Medical Association, the name reverted
once again to the
Calgary
Medical
Society, as it
is known today.
In
its 90 years the society has become an integral stakeholder in the
social and professional issues affecting
Calgary
physicians. It
has worked to establish links with the medical staff associations
of Calgary's hospitals.
Also, the society continues to provide a forum for the view of the
city's community-based physicians.
Membership
has always included a cross-section of the medical/surgical
disciplines in Calgary. The road has
not always been an easy one, with controversial issues and topics
having to be dealt with. However, throughout it all, and before
the formation of the
Calgary and Area Physician's Association, the
Calgary
Medical
Society has
been there, representing area physicians.
Now
that the CAPA represents the
physician's political interests, the society concentrates on the
social needs of physicians. The CMS will strive to provide the
best atmosphere for physicians to air their views and gain
collegial support and fellowship through social contact.
